THE JULY LETTER · DAY 63ISSUE 03 · OPENER

Underfoot, the whole time.

For nine weeks we searched neighborhoods — squares on a map, door by door. This week the city of Callaway's own public-works ledgers gave up a better map: the ditch network. Berthe. Cherry. Boat Race. The Gay Avenue outfall running quiet and cleared to the bayou. A cat crossing July Florida does not cross lawns; he moves down the shaded, water-bearing lines that humans dug, piped, mowed — and forgot. We had been searching the rooms. He lives in the hallways.

And the hallways come with witnesses. Every ditch has a crew that drives it, a mower that walks it, an angler standing at the end of it at first light. This issue names the routes, names the humans who own them, and puts the sardines where the hallways meet the water.

"So that others may live."

The spine: named city drainage works (dashed rust) running south to the bayou. Numbered dots are the station sequence — presence first, hardware second.

The arithmetic of shade. Nothing moves here 10 AM–5 PM in July. The routes that matter hold three things at once: cover, water, prey. Only the ditch lines hold all three for their entire length.

IDENTIFICATION · THE COAT THAT ENDS ARGUMENTSTHE 5-SECOND CHECK

Round spots on the body. Striped head.

Every week the net catches a striped tabby wearing his hopes. The tail settles it — long, banded, dark at the tip — and the coat confirms: round black spots scattered over gold. Bars or swirls down the body, short rounded ears, a short or unbanded tail: it isn't him. Stripes on the head, neck and legs are normal, and a cream chest is his own. At Day 63 expect drift — a pound or two lighter, coat rough or patchy, the harness likely gone. The ears and the banded dark-tipped tail do not drift. Anchor on those.

The bobcat clause

A lean, tall, spotted cat in Florida brush gets called "bobcat" by honest witnesses — the low-held dark-tipped tail reads short at dusk. Bobcat chatter in 32404 is now treated as an Aven signal and swept daily.

Five cats who were not Aven.

The photo-match nets keyed on "big ears + tabby colouring" keep serving striped tabbies. Each got the tribunal; none survived the flank test or the chip digits.

The other missing cat

Another family in 32404 has been looking since late 2025 for a tan spotted Bengal-mix — bigger, heavier, one notched ear. Every Callaway spotted-cat tip gets checked against him too, and anything that is him goes straight to them. Aven’s ears are intact and enormous; that cat is nearly twice his weight. Two searches, one corridor.

03 · THE MACHINEWHAT NOW RUNS WITHOUT US

Every morning, 8:01 Central.

A machine now wakes before the heat and works the case: reads every alert and message, pulls every candidate photo, applies the flank test, sweeps the county's listings and the week's web — then argues with itself. Devil's advocate: who else could this cat be? Red team: is this tip contaminated by our own posters? Only what survives the tribunal is allowed to ring the phone. Silence means a clean sweep, and even the silence is logged.

Yesterday's run — the full log
Pensacola group comment screened: probably not Aven (<30%) but high value-of-information — the group is members-only, so the one Facebook search belongs to the owner. Hostile blame comment: no information content, no engagement. rescuesquad feed, 48 hrs: 12 Bay County alerts — all dogs, one reptile, four reunions, zero found cats. Petco Love: no new matches. Limitation found and since fixed: tracking-redirect links now decoded to direct pages before fetching.
The vet-gate — why patience is armed
He vanished mid-way through a strict prescription diet trial. Any holder feeding ordinary food has, within days, a visibly unwell cat whose only exits — vets, pet stores, rescues — are exactly where the outreach grid now stands. The specific symptoms stay private: they are the shibboleth that separates a true finder from a scammer on every call.
The confession — what the availability draft would have said
"Two shelter matches and a Facebook spotted cat — could be him!" All three failed on first principles: chip digits, sex, coat colour. The real news is structural: the police email channel was dead for three weeks (now re-sent to working addresses), two repeat-location witnesses sat unanswered for a month (now top of the ledger), and a fifth of the June outreach never arrived (now rebuilt, verified-only).
